a new day

Well, that was one way to start a blog and not follow through.  That also pretty much sums up my eating, weight loss, and exercise lately.  Bad, no, flat out horrible.

Over the holidays I managed to only gain back 1 pound, but somehow put on about 5 in January.  Very defeating.

It has been a vicious cycle of telling myself I will get up and exercise in the morning at 6:00.  Morning rolls around and I decide I will work out once the kids are in bed.  Evening arrives and I am tired and tell myself I will get up in the morning, etc.

It doesn’t help that it is Fah-Reezing outside and we are currently iced into our house.   However, while I can’t get out to run, I could still be on the elliptical or doing a workout DVD.

Today I did something crazy, well not really crazy.  I took before pictures.  It is amazing how you can look in the mirror each day, know your clothes don’t fit, but still somehow live in denial of how unhealthy, overweight and out of shape you are.

I am still somewhat shocked at the pictures I took.  It was somewhat a slap in the face.  Wow, is that really what I look like?  Did I really let it get this out of hand?

While I’m not ready to post those pictures online, I am going to post my measurements, as embarrassed as I may feel.

weight – 166lbs

waist (natural) – 35″

waist (belly button) – 36.5″

hips – 42″

thighs – (L) 25″ (R) 24.5″

arms – (L) 12.5″ (R) 12.25″

It makes me want to cry.  I’m looking at today as my new “day 1.”

Monday Goals

Last week I had great intentions of getting back on track with my eating/exercising after letting Halloween and sugar throw me off course.  I did pretty good on Monday and Tuesday, but quickly got wrapped up in the craziness of having 4 kids at the house.  (Although the week went well, it is definitely a challenge to have two babies in the house!)

I’ve definitely been letting myself make up excuses for why I haven’t been eating as well as I should or why I didn’t find time to get even a quick workout in.  The truth is, if I really want to do this, I will find a way to do it.  I’m not the first person to have three kids of her own and an extra Monday-Friday.  I’m not the only person whose hubster works long hours.  I’m not the only person who finds it too dark to run early in the AM and too dark to run in the PM after the hubster gets home.  We own a nice elliptical… there is no excuse to not at least jump on for a few minutes on busy days.

After feeling defeated and discouraged over the weekend I decided it would be helpful to write down some weekly goals that will help me stay accountable.

1.  Track eating Monday-Wednesday, Friday – Saturday (Next week I plan on writing my goals on Sunday morning and don’t plan on tracking Thanksgiving eating 🙂

2.  Do Jillian’s 30 Day Shred 3 times

3.  Jog/walk the ORRRC Turkey Trot (5 miles)

4.  Work out a total of 6 times.

Turkeys for Lunch

In an attempt to make lunches a little more interesting around our house I try to do something fun with the boys’ plates. In October we had lots of jack-o-lantern shaped lunches, but we hadn’t done anything fun in a few weeks.

Today when I asked the boys if they wanted a surprise lunch, Kellan said he wanted a turkey for lunch. “Like our pumpkins, mom!”

Ummm, jack-o-lantern = easy. Circle, face, stem, the end.

Turkey? I was clueless for a minute and then remembered the ever popular “hand turkey.” I’m sure you remember making one in preschool or kindergarten.

I quickly realized that my hand was too big for the bread I was using so I dug out a hand shaped cookie cutter.

I cut out two pieces of bread for each sandwich.

I also cut out cheese in the same shape.

Added carrots for feathers.

Finally, carrot shavings for the legs and nose, and a craisin for the waddle.

(We added some yogurt on the side!)

What do you do to spice up your kids’ lunches?

Things I Love Thursday – Craigslist

It’s that time of the year! Thanksgiving is next week, Christmas is right around the corner and BLACK FRIDAY IS IN 8 DAYS!!! Yes, I just yelled at you 🙂

I hate crowds. I hate people touching me…but I push it all to the back of my mind one day a year because I LURVE me some Black Friday deals.

My sister and I have only been going for the past two years, and honestly, we don’t buy much. Its more the excitement of getting up WAY to early once a year to stand in the freezing cold with a zipper that doesn’t zip over your pregnant belly (oh wait, that was last year!), and no gloves, with a hot chocolate or coffee, with a bunch of strangers to attempt to get a great deal on some random things.

This year our budget is much, much smaller than previous years since, you know, I’m not working. So, in preparation for next Friday, I needs some extra cash moneys!

Every year I clean out a bunch of toys and things for Goodwill to make room for the ridiculous amount of gifts that will come into our home from family and friends.

Motivated by John and Sherry and Caitlyn, I’m starting a little early and am aiming to get rid of 200 items from our house.

Where does Craigslist come into play? As I’m going through things I have three piles – trash, Goodwill, and Craigslist.

Anything that I think I can sell for $10+ is going in the Craigslist pile. Here’s what went up so far this AM:

The Fisher Price Fun2Learn Laughtops are already spoken for AND I’ve got a few more things ready to go up!

Anything that doesn’t sell by the end of Saturday, I am dropping the prices on, and anything left next Wednesday is making the trip to Goodwill.

By next Friday, I’m hoping to have some extra $$$ in my pocket for shopping!

Do you use Craigslist? We’ve mostly used it in the past for curb alerts. Any tips?

The big kids are at preschool. Both babies are asleep. One may even be snoring.

I’m sitting in the quiet have my crack in a cup coffee.

I know that I should probably be getting a load of laundry done, or unloading the dishwasher, or squeezing in a quick workout. I can’t help but think this will probably be the only time the house will be quiet for the rest of the day, so I’m going to sit here with my coffee and have a date with Google Reader J

My grandparents are coming over this afternoon to help with the boys while I take Bennett for his 6 month appointment. I originally thought that I would take all four kids with me, and then realized that was crazy talk! I’m so thankful that my grandparents are still energetic enough to help out when I need them!

What is your crack in a cup? Mine is a Grande soy, no whip, white mocha. Yum!

Wish Me Luck!

Tomorrow my sister goes back to her job as a 1st grade teacher after taking the past four and a half months off with my nephew, Big T. This, my friends, means that starting tomorrow I will not only have my three hooligans to look after, but will also have a 4th child.

Two preschoolers.

Two infants.

Two carseats to carry into preschool.

Four mouths to feed.

Eight buns to wipe.

I have a feeling I’m going to need A LOT of caffeine for the next few days as we adjust.

I don’t think I mentioned that I’m going to have to set an alarm for the first time in 6 months!

I think there will probably be plenty of this until we find our new groove:

I also know that their will be plenty of snuggles, books to read, walks to take, and love to share.

Wish me luck friends!

I do… or something

I had a wedding to go to today for a teacher/friend of mine.  She’s Catholic.  I’m not.  Catholic weddings make me all nervous.  I never know what to do, what to say, when to say it.  I just mouth “watermelon” and figure with all of the standing up/sitting down that I’ve gotten in my squats for the day.

We made bets on what time the priest would say “I now pronounce you man and wife.”  The wedding started at 2:00 and I guessed 3:15.  Jodi went with 3:14 and Pedro, 3:17. They made me guess first.  Do you see how I was screwed from the get go?  Jodi was the winner.

At the reception each guest got a beer koozy (have I mentioned that my friends like a little drinky drinky from time to time?)

Don’t forget to ask yourself…

One of my dear friends (Katie) flipped to the bottom.  “OPI?!?!  What the heck does OPI mean?!?!”

Try again friend 🙂

Just one of the many reasons that I love my girls!

By the way, my thumb nail isn’t really yellow!  That’s what I get for not setting the white balance…

Sooooo, I guess we fit in here, huh?!?

We’ve been passing a cold around our house for the past month.  As soon as one person starts to get well, another one is down.  I assume this will continue to be the case with five people in our family.   I’m calling Puffs tomorrow about buying stock.

Anyway, the hubster and I were cleaning the humidifiers for the big kids’ room and the the nursery and needed to look for filters for one of them.  We headed towards “the blue hardware store” (Lowe’s) and realized it was 7:45 and they closed at 8:00.  The story of our life.  We’re always just a little late… always.  This was true when we had one child and is still true now that we have three.

I already had a coffee, the hubster had a Mt. Dew and the big bugs had icees.  Surely we couldn’t just turn around and go home.  BUT is was a Sunday.  At 8:00.  What was open???  You guessed it, the one, the only WALMART.  One thing you should know about me.  I. HATE. WALMART.  Every single time I go there I swear I will never go back.  Ever.  It drives me insane.  They never have more than 2 of the 3000 lanes open, so you always wait in line for half of your life.  I have been run into by more kids pushing carts than I care to count.  Something always goes wrong, like the time I went for a new tea maker, knowing it would be cheaper than Target.  When I got my receipt I realized I was charged the wrong price.  No biggie, I’ll just over the customer service and wait behind the 20 people there.  Umm, no thanks.  Next time I’ll just go to Target… the one with a Starbucks in it.

Back to the story at hand.  We decided to cruise through Walmart.  Surprisingly the trip was pretty great.  We got some great deals which I’ll write about later (hint: 90% off Halloween).  About half way through our trip I ran to the restroom.  While washing my hands I realized I had something on my sweatpants… hmm, maybe a little breastmilk??  When I got back to the fam, Alex had taken his jacket off and had ketchup, or something all over the front of his shirt.  I glance over at Kellan who has a cold and has crust all over his face.   The hubster, who had been working on a retaining wall in the backyard still had on his work clothes.

Me:  “We’re kind of a hot mess.  I’ve got something on my pants, Alex has ketchup on his shirt, Kellan’s face is a mess, Bennett spit up carrots on his PJ’s and my jacket, and you’re dirty.”

Hubster:  “Yeah, I guess we fit in here, huh?”
